People in UK please come in: Free cell phone?

I am asking for one of my friend. Is it still possible to have a free cell phone by signing a contract of paying a certain amount of telephone fee?

Any harsh terms?

Answer:

Hi Alfred,

yes, it is still possible to obtain a mobile %26#39;phone on contract without paying an %26#39;up front%26#39; fee.

The down side to this is that, although, generally you can get a bunch of %26#39;free%26#39; calls and/or text messaging time you will be paying for ever, even if you don%26#39;t use the phone much.

This can mean that, overall, you could pay far more by having a %26#39;free%26#39; %26#39;phone than you would by buying a %26#39;phone on a %26#39;pay as you go%26#39; scheme.

There will be a minimum length of contract, usually 12 months, though sometimes longer and you may pay more for %26#39;extra%26#39; calls that take you over the agreed maximum, if any.

So there are a number of things to consider before signing a contract. Some contracts are notoriously difficult to cancel (Orange are particularly bad for this)

It is sometimes possible to get a free or extremely cheap mobile even on a %26#39;pay as you go%26#39; tariff. Although I no longer live in the UK I have managed to get a modern and up to date mobile which cost me just 10.00€ up front and calls are cheap, too.

So look around and search out the best deal before signing.

Good luck,
