when I chirp (walkie-talkie) my friend, "a5: user not reachable" comes on the screen... does it mean the same as "user not available"?
I have a boost mobile phone, my friend has a nextel phone--- does that matter?
Answer:
It used to be if you tried to direct connect to an
invalid number you would get some message letting you know that it was absolutely no good.
It seems that with the rollout of NWDC and Verizon%26#39;s thing
that now if you put in a 10 digit phone number and ptt,
you get the message "User Not Reachable A5"
If memory serves, that is the same message we used to get
trying to DC someone out of our home markets pre NWDC.
User not avaliable means just that.
If its a number not in service it%26#39;ll tell you number not in service.
As you know, Nextel is not the only iDEN operator. Each operator has ranges of DC numbers allocated to them. When you place a DC call, the system attempts to map that number to a particular database. If the number you entered does not fall into a range of numbers assigned to that provider, it doesn%26#39;t necessarily mean that that%26#39;s an invalid number as it could be used by a different provider. There%26#39;s just no way for the system to determine that (unless they had linked up their networks).
