Data, as in accessing the internet and email is not free, i would give T-Mobile a call to see if they offer any type of data plan for pre-paid
Do not wait for the iphone, they have made the iphone unlockable. When and if they find a solution for unlocking, any unlocked iphones that hit the market will be priced higher then most people would ever consider spending
Bonds, one other thing to remember, smart phones are typically bulky, you might find that although you like the added features, you might not enjoy the phone because of size and the added complication Vs a standard phone. Good luck
